Deel review: Employer of Record in Africa

Deel is the largest and best-known global employment platform, and in Africa it is a good one: broad coverage, excellent software, and since its 2024 acquisition of Johannesburg payroll company PaySpace, a genuine payroll engine on the continent. What it does not give you is a clear answer, country by country, on whether your employee sits on a Deel-owned entity or a partner’s, nor an Africa specialist who knows your account. At $599 per employee per month it is also one of the more expensive routes in. We rank it fourth for Africa and explain why.

Strengths

  • Covers nearly every African country on the same platform you use everywhere else
  • Owns an African payroll engine: PaySpace, Johannesburg, acquired 2024, with native payroll across dozens of African countries
  • Best-in-class software: EOR, contractors, payroll, HRIS, immigration and IT in one product
  • Flat, published $599 price with no setup fee and month-to-month terms
  • The largest independent review base in the category, consistently above 4.5
  • SOC 1, 2 and 3; ISO 27001; GDPR and POPIA compliant

Watch for

  • Deel does not publish which African countries sit on its own entities and which on partners; ask per country
  • $599 is before a country-specific security deposit and statutory employer costs
  • Support is chat-first; a named person who knows your account comes with scale, not by default
  • Africa is covered within a 150-country footprint, not as a specialism
  • No published African office beyond the PaySpace operation in Johannesburg
  • Ongoing litigation with Rippling over alleged corporate espionage, filed March 2025

Fit

Who Deel suits, and who should look elsewhere

Choose it if…

  • You are hiring in many regions at once and want Africa inside the same dashboard, contracts and reporting
  • Your team is software-first and will live in the platform: HRIS, expenses, equipment, immigration
  • You already run payroll or contractors on Deel and want one vendor
  • You have the scale to get a dedicated customer success manager

Look elsewhere if…

  • You need to know, before signing, that the employer in Lagos or Nairobi is the provider’s own company: see our RemotePeople review
  • You want a named account manager from the first hire
  • You still need to find the candidate; Deel’s sourcing tool is not a recruitment service
  • Your plan is Africa-only and you would rather have a specialist: see EOR In Africa or Africa HR

Coverage & entities

Where Deel employs in Africa, and through whom

Deel offers EOR in more than 130 countries and, by press accounts of the PaySpace deal, in nearly every African country except a handful in Central and West Africa. It describes itself as owning 250 legal entities worldwide and has in the past published a list of owned-entity countries; that page no longer resolves, and no current Deel page states, for any African country, whether the employer is a Deel-owned company or a local partner. Third-party guides disagree with each other about South Africa. Our table reflects what can be verified today.

How to read this. “Not disclosed” is not an accusation; Deel may well employ on its own entity in several of these countries. It means a buyer cannot tell from Deel’s public material, and must ask in the proposal for the employing entity’s name and registration number. The provider we rank first publishes which of its African markets sit on its own companies; Deel does not, and that is the single biggest reason for the gap between them.

What Deel can demonstrably claim in Africa is payroll. PaySpace, bought in March 2024 for a reported $100 million, had been running Deel’s payroll in ten African countries before the deal and brought native engines across dozens of African markets, now sold as Deel Local Payroll. For a buyer, that means contributions calculated by a system built for South African, Kenyan or Nigerian rules rather than a global template, which is worth a great deal on a continent where filing errors are fined.

Positioning

One platform for everything, with Africa inside it

Deel’s pitch is the all-in-one: hire contractors and employees anywhere, run payroll on owned engines, manage the HRIS, equipment and immigration, and see it all in one place. It has grown from a contractor-payments tool in 2019 into a company with 40,000 customers, more than a million workers on the platform, over $1 billion in annual revenue and a $17.3 billion valuation after its October 2025 raise. The software is the best in the category and it keeps shipping.

In Africa that breadth cuts both ways. If you are adding a developer in Lagos to a team that already spans twelve countries on Deel, the convenience is real and the quality of the platform will carry you. If Africa is the plan, you will find that Deel’s country pages are templates, that there is no African office to call beyond the payroll operation in Johannesburg, and that the question of who actually employs your hire is answered in the proposal rather than on the website. Deel Hire, its sourcing tool, surfaces candidates but is not a recruitment service with in-country recruiters.

Pricing

What Deel charges

Deel publishes one EOR price, $599 per employee per month, and says there are no hidden fees. That is true of the platform fee. It is not the whole cost: EOR hires require a country-specific security deposit, typically around a month’s gross salary, which does not appear on the price list, and statutory employer contributions are billed on top. Contracts are month-to-month and can be cancelled at any time, subject to local notice and severance law for the employee. Fees are invoiced in USD; the employee is paid in local currency, so the buyer carries FX exposure on the fee.

Local track record

How long, and how deep, in Africa

Deel was founded in San Francisco in 2019 and has had African hires on the platform for most of its life, but its operational presence on the continent dates from March 2024, when it acquired PaySpace, a Johannesburg payroll company founded in 2000 with 14,000 customers and payroll engines in 44 countries across Africa and beyond. PaySpace became Deel’s exclusive calculation engine and gave it something no other global platform has: a South African payroll team with two decades of local statutory experience.

Beyond that, Deel publishes no African office. Job postings for South Africa and East Africa payroll roles suggest in-region staff, and the contractor side of the business has long been popular with African freelancers paid by foreign clients. But a buyer looking for someone in Nairobi or Cairo who knows the local rules and your account will not find one listed.

No provider in our ranking comes close to Deel’s review volume, and the scores hold up at that scale, which is the strongest evidence in Deel’s favour. G2 ranks it Leader in Employer of Record and first in its EOR, Global Employment and Multi-Country Payroll reports. Praise clusters around the software, the speed of contractor payments and the breadth of countries.

The criticism clusters too, and it is consistent across platforms: support that is competent but slow outside business hours and hard to escalate to a person; payout delays and corrections that take a week; and a feeling, among smaller clients, of being one of forty thousand. On Reddit the sentiment is mixed. A March 2026 r/remotework thread titled “Looking for Deel alternatives” runs through fifteen competitors, with the original poster’s complaint that “$599/month per international employee is getting real old real fast” and support that “takes forever when stuff actually breaks”; in r/internationalbusiness the same month Deel is still named, alongside G-P, as a safe default because “both own their entities.” One r/Payroll user reports “constant issues with Deel regarding billing and invoicing.” None of this is unusual for a platform of Deel’s size, but it is the pattern.

“Deel and Globalization Partners are good options to look at. Both own their entities.”r/internationalbusiness, Top EOR services in 2026, August 2026
“Paying $599/month per international employee is getting real old real fast.”r/remotework, Looking for Deel alternatives, March 2026

Two further matters a buyer should know. In March 2025 Rippling sued Deel in US federal court alleging Deel had cultivated an informant inside Rippling; Deel denies wrongdoing and the companies have filed suits against each other. And Deel’s security deposit and employer-cost pass-throughs, while standard, are the most common source of “hidden fee” complaints in reviews, so get both in writing.

Bottom line

Should you shortlist Deel?

If Africa is one region in a wider programme and your team lives in software, yes: the platform is the best there is, the payroll engine underneath it is now genuinely African, and the review base says most customers are happy. If Africa is the point, be more careful. The best reason to choose Deel is that you will never need a second vendor; the best reason to hesitate is that it will not tell you on its website who employs your hire in Lagos, and at $599 before deposit it is paying a premium for that uncertainty. In the proposal, ask for the employing entity’s name and registration number in each country, the deposit amount and refund terms, and whether a named customer success manager comes with your contract size.

Deel in Africa: questions buyers ask

Does Deel own its entities in Africa?

Deel says it owns 250 legal entities worldwide but does not publish which African countries are among them. Its South African payroll operation, PaySpace, is Deel-owned; whether EOR employees in South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya or Egypt are employed by a Deel company or a partner is confirmed in the proposal, not on the website. Ask for the entity name and registration number.

How much does Deel cost for an African hire?

$599 per employee per month, flat, plus a country-specific security deposit of roughly one month’s salary and the statutory employer contributions for that country. There is no setup fee and contracts are month-to-month.

Is Deel’s payroll in Africa run locally?

Yes. Since acquiring PaySpace in March 2024 Deel calculates African payroll on PaySpace’s engines, which were built in Johannesburg for African statutory rules and now operate as Deel Local Payroll.

Can Deel recruit the candidate as well as employ them?

Not as a service. Deel Hire is a sourcing and applicant-tracking tool at $14 per worker per month; it does not provide in-country recruiters. If you still need to find the person, see our RemotePeople review.

How quickly can someone start?

Deel does not publish an African onboarding time on its country pages. Third-party guides report two to five working days for a South African citizen once documents are in; work-permit cases take longer and depend on the country.

How we reviewed Deel

Scored on the same eight criteria as every provider on this site, weighted equally. Facts were checked against Deel’s published pages, press coverage of the PaySpace acquisition, Deel’s own funding announcements and independent review platforms, and marked “not disclosed” where Deel’s public material does not answer the question. Deel did not pay to be reviewed and did not see this review before publication. Scores are opinions based on public information and direct experience, not measurements.
